BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP BLASTS INTO BRANDS HATCH THIS EASTER
This Easter weekend (22-25 April) the eagerly-anticipated opening round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship will take place at Brands Hatch, as 38 riders from eight different nations battle it out on track for the first time this year.
Double BSB champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne from nearby Sittingbourne and Lingfield’s Tommy Hill will be preparing to give their home crowd something to celebrate for the HM Plant Honda and Swan Yamaha teams respectively. Both riders have their sights firmly set on victory at their home track, so expect a turf war between the two Kent-based riders, whilst Maidstone’s Scott Smart will by vying for glory in the Evo class on his BSB return for the Moto Rapido Ducati team.
Byrne said: “It’s been a long winter but I am really ready to race now. The Brands Hatch weekend is going to be massive; it is a track I have missed dearly since the last time I raced in BSB back in 2008. To be honest rolling down Paddock Hill Bend on the HM Plant Honda on Good Friday will be enough to put a smile on my face from the start. I always seem to get lots of local support there and I want to do a good job on Easter Monday for the fans as well as myself and the team. The talking stops at Brands Hatch; it is then all about the racing.”
Hill said: “I just want to get to Brands Hatch. We set a new lap record at Cartagena in Spain and we felt confident after those tests. Once we have the first day on Good Friday to blow the cobwebs away we just need to be consistent and score some good points. That was the approach I had last season and I came away with a first and second place plus the championship lead. I just need to push on at my home circuit, get the best results I can for the Swan Yamaha team and then prepare for Oulton Park the following weekend.”
However, an influx of international stars will also be ready to pile the pressure on to the British contingent including American ace John Hopkins, who makes his debut in BSB following a recent return to MotoGP for the Spanish round, and Australian Josh Brookes who finished in second overall in 2010 and now lines up for Relentless Suzuki. The opening round will also see BSB history being made as Jenny Tinmouth becomes the first female rider to compete in the championship.
Hopkins said: “It’s going to be a big weekend and there are lots of good riders out on track who all have proved they can challenge for the wins and I know it is going to be tough. I have been told that an American rider has never won a BSB race; it would definitely be cool to make history and it would be a great achievement too.”
Reigning MCE Insurance British Superbike champion Ryuichi Kiyonari begins his title defence this weekend as the Japanese ace bids for an unprecedented fourth championship crown. Kiyonari is currently the most successful rider in BSB history with a record 41 race wins and last season equalled Niall Mackenzie’s record of three titles; however the HM Plant Honda rider believes that this could be one of the hardest seasons he has every experienced as he prepares for the opening two races next weekend.
Kiyo said: “Our pre-season testing has been very good. I think we are in a better place now than we were before Brands Hatch last year because we have tried very hard over the winter to improve as we want to win again! There are lots of very good riders in BSB and it is going to be important to be winning races at every round. The races should be exciting for the fans, because it is so unpredictable this year. I want to win at Brands Hatch, for myself and the team and also the people of Japan.”
The four day Easter extravaganza includes an action-packed programme of 18 races during the weekend with the opening two British Superbike Championship races taking place on Easter Monday. The UK’s first female stunt rider Chesca Miles, will also be performing for the crowds on raceday (Easter Monday). Chesca first experienced the adrenaline rush by becoming a stunt pillion rider, but it wasn’t long before she decided to try stunt riding first hand and already she has rocketed to stardom for her skill with the Stunt Starz team.
BSB practice is on Friday and Saturday, with qualifying on Sunday and the two 30 laps races of the opening round are on Easter Monday.

BELLE Vue have signed British champion Chris Harris and leading Australian star Rory Schlein to spearhead their Elite League challenge when the new season starts in March.
Harris, the World No 6, joins the Aces after seven years at Coventry while Schlein, currently racing in the four-round Australian championship, is returning to the club where he spent the 2004 season.
Cornishman Harris, 28, makes no secret of the fact he likes racing on the Kirkmanshulme Lane circuit and proved it by winning the Peter Craven Memorial Trophy last season, despite being disqualified from his first race.
The signing of Harris, who also won the British title 2007 and 2009, is a huge boost for the Aces as they needed a new No 1 to replace Dane Hans Andersen.
The Great Britain World Cup captain will be the only Brit in the 2011 World championship Grand Prix after finishing sixth of the eight automatic qualifiers last season. His greatest achievement was to win the British Grand Prix at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in 2007.
Truro born Harris, who has an 8.06 average, began his speedway career in Youth Development League racing at St Austell and Exeter in 1998 and had spells with Trelawny and Peterborough before joining Coventry in 2004.
He said: “There had been a lot of rumours about me moving but nothing was happening because of the ban on transfers. I had got fed up with it all to the point of thinking I’d just ride in Europe and give Britain a miss.
“But I am English and I want to ride in England. I’ve always enjoyed coming to Belle Vue, I like the track and get on well with the management so this is a great move for me.”
Schlein, 26, returns to Belle Vue on a 6.92 average after finishing last season at Peterborough.
The former Australian Under-16 and Under-21 champion, from Darwin, joined the Aces from Edinburgh but then moved on to Coventry, despite efforts to keep him.
It was a move which caused some friction between him and some fans but Aces’ supremo David Gordon says that Schlein has been keen to return.
Gordon said: “We are delighted to have completed the top end of our team with riders who really want to come to the club.
“Harris’ record speaks for itself and I would like to think that, if we’d been in charge in 2005, Schlein may never have left in the first place.”
The Aces, who had already signed Danes Patrick Hougaard and Charlie Gjedde, have three places left to fill in the side.
Gordon added: “We have options but we know the riders we want.”

Yamaha to field factory specification YZF-R1 at the Isle of Man TT Races
History maker Ian Hutchinson is confirmed to ride for Shaun Muir managed outfit in 2011
Japanese manufacturer Yamaha has confirmed that it will be running a factory supported race team at the 2011 Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy.
Shaun Muir Racing, with support from Yamaha, has signed history making Ian Hutchinson, who became the first man to win five TT races in a single week, beating the record of Phil McCallen who recorded four victories in 1996. He first competed at the TT in 2004 and has won eight races in total including last years clean sweep of five victories.
Hutchinson, who suffered a career threatening injury in the British Supersport Championship at Silverstone following his momentous five wins at the 2010 TT Races, this week confirmed that he is beginning his recuperation programme and is determined to take up his position on the 2011 TT grid.
Speaking at the signing of his two-year deal he said:
“I’ve been cycling on a turbo-trainer since mid-December. Initially I struggled to do five minutes, now I can do 40 and get my heart-rate up to 192, with an average of 184. That was all I could do before the accident.”
Shaun Muir will run and manage the Yamaha team that will benefit from a full works spec R1 Superbike as well as the Superstock and R6 Supersport bike that has performed so well in the British Supersport Championship.
The team are planning to compete in all of the International Road Races - the North West 200, the Ulster Grand Prix, Macau and the Isle of Man TT and will also look to participate in the British Supersport Championship as well.
Simon Belton, Marketing Manager for Yamaha Motor UK Ltd commented:
“The TT Races has been a huge part of Yamaha’s development as a company over the last fifty years and we are delighted to have Ian on board to spearhead our challenge in 2011 as he has proved himself to be one of the leading TT riders.”

MOTOGP ACE JOHN HOPKINS SET TO STORM BSB
Hopkins moved to the World Superbike Championship in 2009 with Stiggy Honda, but was sidelined through injury though he ended last season on a high with podium finishes in the American Superbike Championship and is now ready to make his mark on BSB.
“I am really looking forward to BSB and working with Crescent again, it will obviously be a different crew but I know they are a great group of guys and that will be a good foundation to start the season,” enthused Hopkins.
“I have seen BSB races before and I know that there is some tough competition there, so I am excited to get started - especially as I haven’t raced most of the other riders before. It is pretty much a level playing field in terms of the riders and their experiences, but that always makes for the best racing.
"Everyone says how close BSB is and I know that it will be the same this season, but I know I am joining one of the top teams and we will have been testing ready for the start of the championship.
“I wouldn’t be coming to BSB if I didn’t think I could be successful and I think it will be a better stepping stone for my future. The team had a great season last year and I am confident in them and the bike that we will be up there where we need to be,” continued Hopkins.
He has a clear target ahead of him: “I have been told that no rider from the U.S has ever won a BSB race and it would definitely be nice to change that and make history at the same time for sure. I want to be up there from the get go - I want to get the maximum from both myself, the team and the bike to get results this year,” said Hopkins.
BSB Series Director Stuart Higgs is delighted with the arrival of the high profile Hopkins: “Back in the 70s and 80s riders from the United States regularly graced the English circuits; legends such as Kenny Roberts, Randy Mamola and Freddie Spencer, so it is fantastic for BSB to restart that tradition. I’m sure John’s arrival will be nothing short of spectacular.”
That is a sentiment that Denning shares: "I've never been as excited about a BSB season as I am about 2011. It's great to keep the team together and to be working with John again is a real opportunity. This isn't about money or politics for either of us - it's about ambition and determination and John is putting everything he can into this. It's been a tough couple of months for the BSB team, but the loyalty and support of so many partners and friends has been superb. We're looking to repay them and I hope we add significantly to the excitement of the superb BSB series in 2011."
