Jonathan Rea takes his 2nd WSB win or the season

Jonathan Rea took the tenth World Superbike win of his career as he won race two at Donington in controversial fashion. After a multitude of overtakes and riders running off track on occasion, Haslam looked to have it won until both he and Melandri ran wide as the Italian attempted a pass into the very last corner and Rea pushed inside as a gap opened up. He and Haslam collided and Haslam fell, knocking off Melandri with his stricken bike as he slid across the track. Rea held on to win by just over half a second from Biaggi, with Sykes two second back in third place. Leon Camier (Fixi Crescent Suzuki) was an impressive fourth. Rea said: “In the last corner there were five guys out there wanting to win a race, most of all Melandri came from a long way back on Leon to create a gap that I went for, me and Leon touched and I’m really sorry that he crashed. But more importantly we’ve won, taken 25 points and I’ve given my team a great reward for giving me a great bike this weekend.” Results: 1. Rea J. (GBR) Honda CBR1000RR 34'31.847; 2. Biaggi M. (ITA) Aprilia RSV4 Factory 0.508; 3. Sykes T. (GBR) Kawasaki ZX-10R 2.029; 4. Camier L. (GBR) Suzuki GSX-R1000 4.245; 5. Guintoli S. (FRA) Ducati 1098R 6.595; 6. Badovini A. Lee Richardson

Traggic news that top Speedway rider Lee Richardson has been killed in a crash in Poland RIP Richardson (pictured racing for Swindon Robins in 2007) is believed to have been thrown head first into a solid safety fence while racing for PGE Marma Rzeszow against Betard Sparta Wroclaw. He suffered a serious leg injury and had internal bleeding and breathing difficulties before later dying in a hospital in Wroclaw. It is believed internal bleeding in the chest area is what ultimately killed him. The 33-year-old from Hastings in East Sussex most recently raced in the British speedway league for the Lakeside Hammers and has represented Great Britain on numerous occasions.

KEITH AMOR ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM ROAD RACING

Honda TT Legends rider Keith Amor has announced his retirement from road racing after serious shoulder injuries sustained in 2011 have failed to heal.

“I’ve decided to retire,.” he said last night after receiving the news that the injured shoulders had not responded to treatment. “My decision has been a hard one and one I have agonised over for the last few months.”

The 39 year old Falkirk rider has scored five podium finishes at the TT, including a second place in last year’s opening Supersport Race and second overall in the 2011 TT Championship. But it was two crashes on the Island last June that spelt the beginning of this premature end for the likeable Scot.

'I had three crashes last year and they left me in a lot of pain.' Amor reflects. A crash during a practice session at Quarterbridge was followed by another fall just down the road at Union Mills in the second Supersport TT. Keith suffered a serious injury to his right shoulder in the falls, which was aggravated by another crash at Leathemstown during the Ulster Grand Prix in August.

“I had major surgery to both shoulders in November with the right having to be totally reconstructed and the ligaments tightened in the left as well.' Keith explained. 'I had a MRI scan today to check if the ops have been successful but the doc said it hadn’t healed and I would need further surgery. So that’s me done with racing.”

This time last year the Falkirk man was on cloud nine when it was announced that he was to partner John McGuinness in the ‘works’ Honda TT Legends squad to campaign on the roads and in the FIM World Endurance Championship.

The Scot continued to race with his damaged shoulders after June in both the endurance series and at the Ulster Grand Prix, but the experience of racing whilst not properly fit has helped him make up his mind to quit.

“I was injured all of last year and I am not going to ride in that condition again. I am in racing to win and I want to be competitive, not just be out there to make up the numbers,” he said.

It isn't all doom and gloom in the Scot's life though. He has set up home in the sunshine of Cyprus this winter and got engaged to his girlfriend Charley at Christmas and they are now expecting their first child together.

“I will be 40 this year and I have done a lot in racing in a short time.”he reflected after making the announcement to quit. “I started my career in 2001 at Knock hill with an orange bib at a Kirkcaldy club meeting as a novice and ended it 10 years later as a member of Honda Europe’s TT Legends team. I didn't race any roads at all until 2005 and I only went full-time in 2007. A lot of hard work went into getting here for it all to go wrong like this but everything changed with a simple twist of fate.”

Paul Philips, TT and Motorsport Manager, Isle of Man Government commented:

“Despite his late start to TT Racing Keith has had a great career. People often forget that he only began racing on the Mountain Course in 2007 and was a whisker away from Steve Plater as fastest newcomer lap that year. He finished on the podium in his second year and went on to claim at least one podium a year every year since. He quickly established himself as one of the leading TT riders and he was a great teammate to John McGuinness last year. I have no doubt that with had he continued to race at the TT fully fit, he would have won races and he is a popular figure who will always be welcome on the Isle of Man.”

BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP BLASTS INTO BRANDS HATCH THIS EASTER

This Easter weekend (22-25 April) the eagerly-anticipated opening round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship will take place at Brands Hatch, as 38 riders from eight different nations battle it out on track for the first time this year.

Double BSB champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne from nearby Sittingbourne and Lingfield’s Tommy Hill will be preparing to give their home crowd something to celebrate for the HM Plant Honda and Swan Yamaha teams respectively. Both riders have their sights firmly set on victory at their home track, so expect a turf war between the two Kent-based riders, whilst Maidstone’s Scott Smart will by vying for glory in the Evo class on his BSB return for the Moto Rapido Ducati team.

Byrne said: “It’s been a long winter but I am really ready to race now. The Brands Hatch weekend is going to be massive; it is a track I have missed dearly since the last time I raced in BSB back in 2008. To be honest rolling down Paddock Hill Bend on the HM Plant Honda on Good Friday will be enough to put a smile on my face from the start. I always seem to get lots of local support there and I want to do a good job on Easter Monday for the fans as well as myself and the team. The talking stops at Brands Hatch; it is then all about the racing.”

Hill said: “I just want to get to Brands Hatch. We set a new lap record at Cartagena in Spain and we felt confident after those tests. Once we have the first day on Good Friday to blow the cobwebs away we just need to be consistent and score some good points. That was the approach I had last season and I came away with a first and second place plus the championship lead. I just need to push on at my home circuit, get the best results I can for the Swan Yamaha team and then prepare for Oulton Park the following weekend.”

However, an influx of international stars will also be ready to pile the pressure on to the British contingent including American ace John Hopkins, who makes his debut in BSB following a recent return to MotoGP for the Spanish round, and Australian Josh Brookes who finished in second overall in 2010 and now lines up for Relentless Suzuki. The opening round will also see BSB history being made as Jenny Tinmouth becomes the first female rider to compete in the championship.

Hopkins said: “It’s going to be a big weekend and there are lots of good riders out on track who all have proved they can challenge for the wins and I know it is going to be tough. I have been told that an American rider has never won a BSB race; it would definitely be cool to make history and it would be a great achievement too.”

Reigning MCE Insurance British Superbike champion Ryuichi Kiyonari begins his title defence this weekend as the Japanese ace bids for an unprecedented fourth championship crown. Kiyonari is currently the most successful rider in BSB history with a record 41 race wins and last season equalled Niall Mackenzie’s record of three titles; however the HM Plant Honda rider believes that this could be one of the hardest seasons he has every experienced as he prepares for the opening two races next weekend.

Kiyo said: “Our pre-season testing has been very good. I think we are in a better place now than we were before Brands Hatch last year because we have tried very hard over the winter to improve as we want to win again! There are lots of very good riders in BSB and it is going to be important to be winning races at every round. The races should be exciting for the fans, because it is so unpredictable this year. I want to win at Brands Hatch, for myself and the team and also the people of Japan.”

The four day Easter extravaganza includes an action-packed programme of 18 races during the weekend with the opening two British Superbike Championship races taking place on Easter Monday. The UK’s first female stunt rider Chesca Miles, will also be performing for the crowds on raceday (Easter Monday). Chesca first experienced the adrenaline rush by becoming a stunt pillion rider, but it wasn’t long before she decided to try stunt riding first hand and already she has rocketed to stardom for her skill with the Stunt Starz team.

BSB practice is on Friday and Saturday, with qualifying on Sunday and the two 30 laps races of the opening round are on Easter Monday.
